Symptom

If a BladeCenter HS22 Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) battery is missing, or the socket is broken, an entry will be logged in the Advanced Management Module's (AMM) event log stating the following:

System board (system board VBAT) voltage under critical threshold.

Note: It can take 4 to 5 minutes before logging the entry.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

• BladeCenter HS22, type 7870, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

Workaround

If an error is logged indicating the system board VBAT voltage is under the critical threshold, remove the blade from the chassis, remove the blades' cover, and visually inspect the blade to determine if the battery is present.

Whether the battery is, present or not, insert a new battery, put the blade cover back on, and install the blade into the chassis.

Wait a minimum of 4 to 5 minutes before verifying if the log contains a new entry. If there was, verify that the replacement battery is not dead and there is not an issue with the battery socket.

Additional Information

The BladeCenter HS22 does not differentiate between a missing battery and a dead battery. Both conditions generate the same entry.

Note: If the battery is present, and the above event gets logged, it is possible that the battery is operational, but the socket for the battery has been damaged.
