Leap second for Lenovo hardware, servers, software and tools - Lenovo x86 servers

Symptom

A leap second is a one-second adjustment that is occasionally applied to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to keep its time of day close to the mean solar time

Leap seconds can be introduced in UTC at the end of the months of December or June, depending on the evolution of UT1-TAI.

Since this system of correction was implemented in 1972, 26 leap seconds have been inserted, the most recent on June 30, 2015 at 23:59:60 UTC, and the next leap second will be inserted on December 31, 2016, at 23:59:60 UTC.

     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second

If, for example, users do not have Lenovo hardware, servers, software and tools configured for Network Time Protocol (NTP) synchronization, the clock will have to be adjusted manually due to leap second clock drift.

For industry provided Operating Systems and Applications, contact the supplier for information regarding compliance with Leap Seconds.

Solution

Enable NTP synchronization or manually adjust the clock from time to time if NTP synchronization is not enabled for leap second.

Refer to the following links for more information on leap second:

     https://hpiers.obspm.fr/iers/bul/bulc/bulletinc.dat
     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second

Workaround

If Lenovo hardware, servers, software and tools are not configured for NTP synchronization, the time will have to be adjusted manually from time to time for the leap second.

Additional information

The next positive leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2016. The sequence of dates of the UTC second markers will be:

     2016 December 31, 23h 59m 59s
     2016 December 31, 23h 59m 60s
     2017 January   1,  0h  0m  0s

Refer to following links for more information:

     https://hpiers.obspm.fr/iers/bul/bulc/bulletinc.dat
     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second

Configure NTP synchronization or the time will have to be adjusted manually for the leap second.

Manual re-adjustments should be done periodically due to forward or backward clock drift when the clock is not NTP synchronized.
