No keyboard control or video - IBM Local Console Switch (Type 1735)
RETAIN tip: H172976
Symptom
Users may experience the following issues when using any of the IBM Local Console Switches, 1735-1LX, 1735-2LX, 1735-3LX, and 1735-4LX with the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Conversion Option (UCO) 1.5 m, Option part number 39M2895, replacement part number (CRU) 39M2909:
- no key strokes from the keyboard may be accepted
- no display is shown on the attached monitor
- Unit diagnostics may fail on cable test
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- 1x8 Console Switch, Option part number 17351LX
- 1x8 Console Switch, Option part number 17353LX
- 2x16 Console Switch, Option part number 17352LX
- 2x16 Console Switch, Option part number 17354LX

This tip is not software specific.
Solution
In order to ensure that the UCO 1.5 m, Option part number 39M2895, CRU 39M2909, will work with any of the 1735-xLX units, the firmware must be upgraded to the latest firmware above v2.0.0.0.
The code is available at the following URL:
Workaround
Alternatively to the UCO 1.5 m, Option part number 39M2895, CRU 39M2909, the 1.5 m Virtual Media Conversion Option (VCO) Option part number 39M2894, CRU 39M2908 can be used. This cable does not require any code update. This cable, however, allows only for point-to-point connections. It is not possible to daisy chain any other Cable Option with VCO cable. Only one VCO can be used per 1735 port.
Additional information
The original IBM 3 m Console Switch Cable (USB) Option part number 31R3132, CRU 31R3145, has been withdrawn from marketing. The substitute for this cable is the UCO 1.5 m Option part number 39M2895, CRU 39M2909, originally intended for use with the IBM Console Managers 1735-1GX, 1735-2GX, and 1735-4GX only.
Note: The cable length can be extended by using a Cat5 straight through Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cable may not exceed the length of 10 m (32.8 ft).

RETAIN tip: H195626
Symptom
This issue only occurs when a high resolution video card is used, Linux 32-bit or 64-bit is installed as the Operating System (OS), and the Keyboard, Video, and Mouse (KVM) 1735-xLX/xGX switch is used.
Changing to the display mode of 1280 x 1024 x 85 Hz or higher or using "auto" in the display properties causes the monitor to show the mode as "Out of Range."
Note: This issue occurs with either CRT or LCD monitors that are connected through the KVM 1735-xLX/xGX switch.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- 1x8 Console Switch, Option 17351LX
- 1x8 Console Switch, Option 17353LX
- 2x16 Console Switch, Option 17352LX
- 2x16 Console Switch, Option 17354LX
- IBM Global 2x16 Console Manager (GCM2), Option 17352GX
- IBM Global 4x16 Console Manager (GCM4), Option 17354GX
- IBM Local 2x8 Console Manager (LCM2), Option 17351GX
- USB Conversion Option (UCO), Option 39M2895
This tip is not hardware specific.
This tip is not software specific.
The system has the symptom described above.
Workaround
This issue can be avoided by using the Linux Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) driver in the 1024 x 768 display mode, or the 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz and 75Hz rather than using the 1280 x 1024 @ 85 Hz or 1280 x 1024 "auto" display mode. Another method to avoid this issue is to connect the monitor directly to the output of the video card.
This issue does not occur when the OS is Windows.
With a GCM (1735-xGX), use Virtual media Cable Option (VCO) Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) 39M2894 because Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) data in the VCO module can be flashed in field. This has been fixed in the VCO in 1.3.30 or higher firmware release.
With a 1735-xLX and UCO cables, this issue still exists and cannot be flashed with firmware.
Additional information
There is an interaction between the KVM 1735-xLX/xGX switch and the Linux video card driver in the 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz or "auto" display mode.
The UCO adapter cable has a fixed table of supported resolutions, with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz. The table cannot be updated in the field for UCO cable adapters. The cable does not pass server resolution requests to the KVM switch.
