1.0 Before installing Windows
This document provides Netfinity 3500 M20 system users with the installation instructions for a basic Windows NT version 4.0 software installation. Windows NT 4.0 presents many different installation options. You might install or uninstall options that will allow maximum performance from your Netfinity server. This might result in windows and messages that will differ from those in this document. Be sure to follow these instructions for installing Windows NT precisely to ensure that you install Windows NT correctly. Windows NT allows you to install components after the installation process is completed. Determine if the system is equipped with an IBM ServeRAIDTM card. If your system is equipped with an IBM ServeRAID card, please review the "Appendix" before you proceed with the installation instructions in section "2.0" to perform additional procedures.
2.0 Installation instructions
1. Insert the "Windows NT 4.0 installation CD" into the CD-ROM drive and restart the system.
2. After you restart the system, a prompt will display the following message, "Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration Press F6". This message will enable setup to discover that the third party SCSI controller is installed.
NOTE: The prompt will only display for a few seconds; then, it will automatically start running Windows NT setup. Setup will now detect the systems hard disk drive locations and restart the system. After you restart the system, a prompt will display the message in step 2.
3. The system will load Windows NT setup. A blue screen will display Windows NT setup at the top left hand corner of the window. Windows NT setup will begin loading the appropriate files; this process might take several minutes. After loading the appropriate files, you are prompted with a message that indicates setup was unable to determine the type of one or more hard disk drives installed in the system. A list of devices that setup has detected, loaded, and support will be the following devices:
o QLogic PCI SCSI Host adapter
o AMD PCI SCSI Controller/Ethernet adapter
o BusLogic FlashPoint
o Compaq 32-Bit Fast-Wide SCSI –2/E
Press the S key to specify additional SCSI adapters for use with Windows NT version 4.0.
4. A list of SCSI adapters will appear. Select other and choose the Adaptec Ultra160 Family PCI SCSI Controller (NT 4.0) driver from the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set diskette.
5. Insert the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set diskette into the diskette drive and press Enter.
6. Windows NT setup will automatically locate the appropriate hardware drivers. A list of devices will appear, select the Adaptec Ultra160 Family PCI SCSI Controller (NT 4.0) and press Enter.
7. After setup has completed loading the selected driver, return to the window that displays the list of loadable devices in step 3. The list displays the following devices:
