For Lenovo ThinkSystem Storage Manager GUI update:

1. Perform one of the following:
- In the banner, click the system panel and select Update Firmware.
- In the System topic, select Action > Update Firmware.
The Update Firmware panel opens. The Update Controller Modules tab shows versions of
firmware components that are currently installed in each controller.
2. Click Browse and select the firmware file to install.
3. Click OK. A panel shows firmware-update progress.
The process starts by validating the firmware file:
- If the file is invalid, verify that you specified the correct firmware file.
- If you did verify, try downloading it again from the source location.
- If the file is valid, the process continues.
4. Wait for the installation to complete. During installation, each updated module automatically restarts.
5. In the Lenovo ThinkSystem Storage Manager display, verify that the expected firmware version is installed on each module.

For Lenovo Thinksystem Storage Manager CLI update for controller FW:
1. Obtain the firmware package, and save it to a temporary directory.
2. Locate the controller firmware file in the downloaded/extracted folder.
The firmware controller filename is in the following format: lnvgy_fw_storage_gtXXXrYYY-ZZZ_anyos_noarch.bin.bin.
3. Using Lenovo Storage Manager, prepare to use FTP:
a. Determine the network-port IP addresses of system controllers.
b. Verify that the system FTP service is enabled.
c. Verify that the user login has permission to use the FTP interface and has manage access rights.
4. Open a command prompt (Windows) or a terminal window (UNIX), and navigate to the directory containing the firmware file to load.
a. Enter a command with the following syntax:
ftp . (For example: ftp 10.1.0.9)
b. Log in as an FTP user (user = ftp, password = !ftp).
c. Enter a command by using the following syntax:
put flash
where represents the binary firmware filename
5. Wait for the installation to complete. During installation, each updated module automatically restarts.
6. If needed, repeat these steps to load the firmware on additional modules.
7. Quit the FTP session.
8. Verify that the expected firmware version is installed on each module.
- In Lenovo ThinkSystem Storage Manager, right-click the system in the Configuration View panel, and then select Tools > Update Firmware.
- In the Command Line Interface (CLI), execute the show version or the show enclosures command.

It is recommended that you disable the Partner Firmware Update feature of the controllers
prior to starting the FW download. To disable this feature :

1. Login to the controller management port for either controller A or B using the manage account.
2. Type show advanced-settings.
3. Check for this line:

Partner Firmware Upgrade: Enabled

4. If the setting is enabled then type :

set advanced-settings partner-firmware-upgrade off

5. Then type show advanced-settings. Verfify that the value is now:

Partner Firmware Upgrade: Disabled

6. You will then need to perform the FW download using the CLI or GUI using the steps above.
7. Once the download is complete for both controllers you will need to enable Partner Firmware Update again
to insure that controller replacement works properly.
8. To enable Partner Firmware update.
9. Login to the controller management port for either controller A or B using the manage account.
10. Type :

set advanced-settings partner-firmware-upgrade on

For users who plan to use Lenovo 430-16e or 430-8e SAS HBA with DS2200/DS4200 in
VMware ESXi 6.5u2, 6.5u3, 6.7u2, and 6.7u3 environments, we suggest that a
specific firmware, which contains proper connection timeout settings for
430-16 and 430-8e is applied to avoid the issue that the primary path
connection can not be restored automatically after storage controller
reboot/reset or re-inserting the primary path cable. You may find this
specific firmware along with G280R002-03 firmware on the same download
web page. For further information, please go to

Primary path connection cannot be restored on systems with DS series storage arrays and HBA 430-16e and 430-8e - Lenovo Storage

The issue does not happen with lsi-msgpt35 driver 08.00.00.00 in earlier ESXi versions.

The root cause is the lsi-msgpt35 driver versions 09.00.01.00 and 11.00.00.00 use a broken VMware API. The workaround is to use this specific firmware with the correct timeout values to get around the issue to allow the primary path to be recovered automatically within 144 seconds. However, if the disconnection time goes beyond 144 seconds, it will requires a manual rescan of SAS HBA device in ESXi to recover the primary path.
